The Telehealth Timeline

Written by EZaccessMD | Aug 22, 2024 3:00:00 PM

Telemedicine’s journey from early communication tools to cutting-edge digital healthcare is a story of innovation and transformation. What started with the simple exchange of medical information via telegraphs and telephones has evolved into a preferred method of care that connects patients and doctors across the miles that separate them. As we trace this timeline, we uncover the remarkable technological breakthroughs that have shaped the way we deliver and receive care.

The Dawn of Telemedicine

Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call ever on March 7th, 1876.

Telemedicine’s roots traced to the invention of the telegraph in the mid-19th century. During the Civil War, the army used the telegraph to communicate medical information, order supplies, and report casualties. This marked the first recorded instance of using electronic communication for health purposes. Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone in 1876 opened new doors for remote medical consultations. By 1879, physicians were already using the telephone to diagnose conditions like croup by listening to a patient’s symptoms over the phone.

The Rise of Remote Diagnostics

In the late 19th century, Wilhelm Röntgen's accidental discovery of X-rays revolutionized diagnostic imaging, capturing the first image of bones through the use of photographic film. Röntgen held a piece of lead in front of an electron-discharge tube, he noticed that the rays were blocked by the lead. However, he was astonished to see his own flesh illuminated around the bones on a fluorescent screen behind his hand. By placing photographic film between his hand and the screen, Röntgen captured what would become the world’s first X-ray image.

This breakthrough laid the foundation for modern radiology, which would later be complemented by early 20th-century advancements in telemedicine. By 1905, Willem Einthoven was transmitting heart sounds via telephone, thus pioneering remote cardiac monitoring. The 1920s saw further innovations, with hospitals adopting two-way radio communication to extend medical care to remote locations, including ships at sea and police forces.

Visual Connectivity in Healthcare

In 1959, the University of Nebraska utilized two-way video communication for telemedicine, allowing clinicians to conduct neurological examinations remotely. The 1960s witnessed a major breakthrough when NASA leveraged satellite communication to deliver healthcare to American Indian reservations. This project demonstrated the potential of telemedicine to provide healthcare in remote and underserved areas.

The Pandemic

Telemedicine saw unprecedented growth during the COVID pandemic as healthcare providers sought ways to continue delivering care while minimizing in-person contact. The pandemic highlighted the importance of telemedicine in ensuring continuity of care, reducing virus transmission, and providing triage services. As a pioneer in the field, EZaccessMD led the way by becoming the first healthcare provider in the U.S. to offer in-home COVID testing, further demonstrating the critical role of telemedicine in healthcare delivery.

75% of healthcare providers were delivering care via telehealth, compared to just 14% in 2019 .

The Future of Telemedicine

As telemedicine continues to evolve, EZaccessMD stands at the forefront of innovation by combining telemedicine with in-home urgent care services. Unlike traditional telemedicine providers, EZaccessMD goes beyond virtual consultations. When more testing is needed than can be provided over the phone, EZaccessMD delivers diagnostic services like X-rays and strep tests directly to the patient’s doorstep. This unique blend of telemedicine and in-home care ensures that patients receive comprehensive, convenient, and timely healthcare without leaving their homes.
